The Urgent Need for Palliative & Hospice Care in Ethiopia

Why Ethiopia Hospice Care (EHC) Matters Now More Than Ever

In Ethiopia, millions of people are living with serious, life-limiting illnesses — yet access to palliative and hospice care is virtually nonexistent. The concept of comfort-focused, end-of-life care is still in its early stages, with very few services available, limited pain management resources, and minimal training for healthcare professionals in this specialized field.

For patients with cancer, advanced HIV, organ failure, or other chronic conditions, this often means suffering in silence, without adequate relief from pain, emotional distress, or spiritual suffering. Families carry the burden alone, with few or no options for support.

The Reality:

  • Ethiopia has a population of over 120 million people, but less than 5% have access to palliative care.
  • Most healthcare facilities are not equipped to manage pain or provide end-of-life
  • Morphine and other essential pain medications are scarce and tightly
  • Cultural stigma and lack of awareness further limit

Ethiopia Hospice Care (EHC): A Beacon of Hope

At Ethiopia Hospice Care, we are committed to changing this reality. Our mission is to pioneer palliative and hospice care services that bring dignity, relief, and compassionate support to patients and families facing the hardest moments of life.

We are working to support NGO’s (Non-Government Organizations) in Ethiopia that are:

  • Training nurses, caregivers, and community health workers in palliative care principles
  • Advocating for better access to essential pain medications
  • Raising awareness about the importance of hospice care within communities
  • Building partnerships with healthcare providers and government agencies
  • Providing volunteer-driven, holistic care that respects Ethiopian culture and values

Why Your Support Matters

We are at a pivotal moment. With your help, we can:
  • Expand care to more communities
  • Train more health professionals
  • Build sustainable, compassionate systems of support
  • Give people facing serious illness a chance to live — and die — with dignity, comfort, and peace
Every donation, every volunteer, every voice makes a difference.
